Aria is the artist group's name, but it is also a technical word in opera. In a musical, there are the singing parts and the spoken parts. In opera, even the spoken parts such as dialogue are sung so opera is all singing (no one speaks). The speech-like part that is sung is called recitative and that is all the dialogue/narrative that carries the story line that would be spoken if it were a musical. The singing part that is sung for singing sake (not for speaking sake) that carries a melody is called aria.
